Since the beginning of its work, Zelena akcija/FoE Croatia has been conducting campaigns to stop investments in harmful plants that encourage unsustainable waste management, such as waste incinerators, waste incineration in cement plants, inadequate waste disposal, waste management centers with harmful technologies, etc.

More than 20,000 people came yesterday on the main square in Zagreb to send a strong message about the culmination of 20 years of carelessness and incapacity of Mayor Bandic, and demanding thorough system changes. The protest was organised by Zelena akcija - Friends of the Earth Croatia (Zero Waste Croatia Network coordinator) and few partner NGO's who are calling for better separate waste collection system and opposing Mayor's plan to multiple increase monthly bills of citizens.

Zagreb is on the last place out of 28 EU capitals in the separation and recycling of waste. For that reason, few hundreds of people came yesterday in front of the Mayor's office saying this is the culmination of 20 years of carelessness and incapacity of Mayor Bandic, and demanding thorough system changes.

Gathered in a coalition “Zero Waste Croatia”, environmental NGO’s and citizens’ initiatives from all over the Croatia are warning public about dangerous consequences of irrational act of forcing construction of regional centers for waste management and demanding formal resignation of Croatian minister of Environmental Protection and Energetics, Tomislav Ćorić. European Commission has warned about the damages on Monday, and Ministry has once again shown the incredible skills of unconvincing manipulation and indifference towards public interest.

After more than 20 years of consistently pushing for the construction of a waste incinerator in Zagreb, the City Assembly last week made a decision to kick this damaging project out of the Zagreb Spatial Plan!

The city of Zagreb is throwing away about 155 million kuna (about 21 million euros) on the Jakuševac landfill every year. Zagreb could turn that money to profit if only the City provided separate collection of different types of waste deposited there and then selling it on the secondary raw materials market.
