We can declare victory after the intensive campaign of the Citizens' Initiative "Stop the Rebro Incinerator" and Zelena akcija/FoE Croatia against the incinerator on the premises of the Clinical Hospital (KBC) Rebro.
Today the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development published a Decision suspending the process of assessing the environmental impact of the infectious medical waste management facility of KBC Zagreb, which practically means that the process of building the incinerator is stopped.
The reason given was non-compliance with spatial planning documentation, which FoE Croatia warned about and was confirmed by the City of Zagreb. FoE Croatia and the citizens' initiative pointed out a number of other problems with this project that were ignored, but this pressure certainly contributed to a great victory. This is an indication that the voice of citizens really has power, despite the powerful who try to push through harmful projects at the expense of the public interest.
We are sure that the investor will not easily accept this defeat, therefore, strengthened by this victory, we cautiously continue to monitor the situation and advocate the introduction of sustainable solutions for medical waste!
