Spatial politics

The goal of our activities in the field of spatial politics is sustainable and participatory spatial management. Activities are aimed at recognising the various functions that spatial policies (environmental, social, social) should serve, promoting solutions and ways of making decisions that take them into account and encouraging and empowering citizens to actively participate in making such defined spatial decisions.

Space, and the way it is organised, is part of our daily lives. The exercise of our rights and the quality of our lives depend on it. Due to the importance of space for everyday life, its economic value is also great. Converting the use of space in Croatia is still a very common way of creating new value. Given that the decision on conversions is a decision with a high possibility of discretionary decision-making, the risks are extremely high that these decisions are made in the overriding private interest, while neglecting or reducing environmental, social and societal needs.

Some of the most significant results of the work on this topic:

  • the largest civil society campaign "We won’t give up Varšavska" which opened many questions about the management of the City of Zagreb, activated thousands of citizens and stopped further devastation such as those on Cvjetni Square and Varšavska Street (2006-2011);
  • the introduction of positive provisions in the Zagreb General Urban Plan (GUP) in 2013 as a direct result of the campaign for Varšavska street;
  • prevention of harmful changes to the GUP 2020 which were planned as to allow construction in a number of green and recreational zones.

Campaigns:

  • Campaign against the devastation of Cvjetni Square in Zagreb (1995)
  • Campaign for bicycle paths in Zagreb (2000-2002)
  • "We won’t give up Varšavska" (2006-2011)
  • "Return the Magnolia" (2018)
  • "Enough is enough" - a campaign related to Zagreb's problems in spatial planning, waste management and transport (2019 - 2020)
