Regional Conference: "Sustainable development in the Mt. Velebit area"

Providing livelihoods to local communities and protecting natural and cultural heritage on Croatia’s way to the European Union

Regional Conference jointly organised by Municipality Lovinac and Green Action (Zelena akcija/FOE Croatia) will take place at the Home for the Elderly and Disabled in Sveti Rok, Municipality Lovinac on 24th and 25th March 2006 with beginning at 9 a.m.

Conference constitutes a part of the joint CARDS 2003 Cross border project “Sustainable Development and the Strengthening of the Handicraft tradition in the Mt. Velebit Area, Croatia” whose goal is to promote sustainable development and biodiversity conservation in mountainous areas of Croatia and to analyse the presence of, raise awareness of and increase the market value of traditional products in the project area.

With this project we would like to fulfill the following objectives:

• To network and exchange know-how within the area and with similar European areas
• To conserve traditional products and prepare production for the common market of the EU
• To start up and support income-generating activities through pilot projects

The Conference objective is to bring together all interested stakeholders and present best practice examples that can serve as models to local communities for the establishment of income-generating activities.
