Since 2014, FoE Croatia has been intensively cooperating with interested cities and municipalities and directing them towards meeting the goals for obtaining the "zero waste" certificate and significantly increasing the quality of life. In addition, we are active at European level through our involvement in the Zero Waste Europe network.

The “zero waste” model of cities and municipalities has proven to be the most successful model worldwide in reducing waste generation and increasing its reuse, recycling and composting in order to avoid harmful disposal and incineration as much as possible.

Some of the most significant results of the work on this topic:

  • the first "zero waste" cities and municipalities in Croatia: Prelog and surrounding 6 municipalities (2016) and 5 more surrounding municipalities by 2021;
  • candidates for “zero waste” certificate on the island of Krk: all 7 local self-government units;
  • appointment and work in the working group of the City of Zagreb and directing the system according to the zero waste model;
  • improving parts of national legislation on greater obligations to reduce, reuse and separate waste collection.
