At yesterday's meeting of the city council it was finally decided that the constructor, which planned to build on a greenfield site, must build at another location. Visibly happy citizens who fought together with Green Action against this project announced a celebration because their fight for a clean and healthy environment succeeded. The decision came at the last moment because desperate citizens were prepared to take drastic measures like road blocks to fight for their rights. The citizens' group gave an ultimatum to the city's authorities- if the problem wasn't on the agenda of the city council meeting, they would blockade Horvacanska street. It seems that this strategy was successful: after what the city council chairman Milan Bandić called 'one of the council's longest and most difficult meetings', Mr Bandić came personally to tell the citizens the good news.
"Green Action shares the happiness of the citizens of Horvaćanska Street because we supported them from the beginning in their fight for the right to a clean and healthy environment. We hope that now this problem has been solved, problems at 11 similar locations will also be solved", said Silvio Ivičić, spokesperson for Green Action.
